TL;DR

The short version.

  • SEO makes owned pages crawlable, understandable and competitive in search.
  • AEO helps content answer a specific question clearly and directly.
  • GEO expands the job to how a brand is represented across the sources an AI system may retrieve.
  • None of the three creates a guaranteed ranking, citation or recommendation.

01

Start with the shared foundation

Google's current guidance is unusually direct: the SEO practices that help pages succeed in traditional Search still matter in AI Overviews and AI Mode. A page must be crawlable, indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet before Google's generative features can use it.

That means technical SEO, useful content, clear site structure and real expertise did not suddenly become obsolete. AEO and GEO sit on top of those basics. They do not replace them.

The practical implication is that a team should not open a GEO project by inventing a new content system. Start by checking whether the strongest existing pages can be found, understood and trusted. Then look at how the category is described outside the brand's own site.

  • Make important pages easy to crawl and index.
  • Answer the buyer's actual question instead of stretching a keyword across a page.
  • Use clear authorship, original evidence and accurate supporting details.
  • Keep product, service and company facts consistent across the web.
02

AEO is about the answer shape

Answer engine optimization is a practical way to think about extractability. Can a search engine, assistant or human reader quickly locate a useful answer? Strong headings, definitions, comparison criteria, examples and concise summaries help.

This does not mean chopping every page into tiny fragments. Google specifically says there is no special requirement to chunk content for generative search. The goal is clarity for people, not a page written like a database export.

Good answer structure also makes editorial outreach easier. A writer can verify a product detail, understand the comparison criteria and quote an accountable source without hunting through vague marketing pages.

03

GEO widens the field beyond your website

Generative engine optimization asks a broader question: what information does an AI system retrieve when someone asks about your category, and where does your brand fit inside that evidence?

The original GEO research introduced a framework for improving source visibility in generative answers. Its benchmark reported visibility gains of up to 40 percent from tactics such as adding credible citations, statistics and quotations. That is a research result, not a promise that every brand can repeat it.

For a company, the useful part of GEO is not a new acronym. It is the discipline of reviewing the answer, recording the supporting pages and fixing the places where the brand is absent, inaccurate or poorly evidenced.

  • Track prompts, not just keywords.
  • Track mentions and citations across more than one AI platform.
  • Study the outside pages that appear when competitors are recommended.
  • Improve the evidence on pages you own and pursue accurate inclusion on pages you do not.
04

Use the labels to assign the work

SEO owns crawlability, indexing, site quality and organic search performance. AEO owns how clearly a page resolves a buyer question. GEO owns visibility across AI answers, retrieved sources and the wider category narrative.

A practical program connects all three. Fix the owned site, publish information worth using, earn relevant third-party mentions and measure what changes. If a tactic cannot be connected to one of those jobs, it is probably noise.

Responsibility can overlap. A technical SEO lead may uncover the access issue, a content lead may improve the answer and an earned-media lead may pursue the missing comparison page. The label matters less than the handoff.

05

What does not change when the interface changes

Useful evidence still needs a source. A model may summarize that evidence differently, but the underlying facts, dates, entities and relationships need to exist somewhere accessible. Search interfaces can change faster than the work required to publish verifiable information.

OpenAI's publisher guidance makes a similar point from another angle. Public sites can appear in ChatGPT Search, and publishers can control search access through OAI-SearchBot. The crawler choice is technical. Whether the page deserves to be used is editorial.

That is why shortcuts such as a magic schema type, a required llms.txt file or a fixed word count are weak strategies. Build a page that answers a real question, support the claim and make the source reachable.

06

Build one measurement system for all three

Use one dashboard with separate columns for organic rankings, answer inclusion, brand mentions, page citations and referral traffic. Do not collapse those outcomes into one visibility score without preserving the underlying observations.

A monthly review can then ask better questions. Did the page become indexable? Did an outside listicle add the brand? Did an AI answer mention the brand but cite a different source? Each result suggests a different next action.

The strongest program is boring in the best way. It keeps the baseline stable, documents changes and avoids claiming that one tactic caused a result the team cannot prove.
